DARTMOUTH, N.S. – A tournament scam reported out west is targeting hockey teams with fake invitations, and Hockey Nova Scotia has been informed it is now happening in Nova Scotia, too. Teams and families are asked to check any unexpected tournament invitation before acting on it.

What it looks like

The invitations appear to come from a hockey association or a tournament host. They can look very real: tournament-related email addresses, proper logos, and copies of legitimate registration forms. The goal is to get you to click on a link or to make a payment.

What to do

Before clicking on a link, registering for an event, or sending any money to a tournament organizer that you weren’t expecting to hear from, remember to do the following:

• Check the tournament against our tournament listings here: Tournaments
• Approved hockey tournaments in Nova Scotia are listed there, along with the host association, organizer, and contact email.
• Contact the host directly, using the organizer email on our listing or a number you already know, not the contact details in the email.
• Register and pay only through the host.

Treat an invitation that appears to come from Hockey Nova Scotia the same way. If you’re unsure, ask us at info@hockeynovascotia.ca before you act on it.

If a team has already received a suspicious invitation, or has sent payment on one, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at antifraudcentre.ca or 1-888-495-8501.
