THE STORY OF JOHN PARIS JR.

This African Heritage Month, we are proud to help amplify the story of Windsor's John Paris Jr.

In this special Black History Month episode of My Hockey Hero, host Dean Barnes speaks with trailblazer John Paris Jr. about breaking barriers and holding the door open for others in hockey.

Raised in Windsor, N.S., Paris was scouted by Scotty Bowman and signed within the Montreal Canadiens organization. Though his playing career was cut short by serious health challenges, he went on to make history as the first Black coach in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the first Black scout in the National Hockey League, and the first Black general manager in professional hockey. In 1994, he became the first Black head coach in pro hockey, leading the Atlanta Knights to a league championship.

Paris reflects on race, resilience, and community, connecting his journey to the legacy of the Coloured Hockey League and the Black hockey tradition in Nova Scotia. His story is one of perseverance, leadership, and the lasting bonds formed through the game.
