SWEET NAMED DENNY DEVEAU AWARD RECIPIENT

Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce that Rufus Sweet is the recipient of the 2025 Denny Deveau Award.
The Denny Deveau Award is named in honour of former Hockey Nova Scotia president Denny Deveau and is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and made significant contributions to the advancement of girls' hockey in Nova Scotia.
This year, we are pleased to recognize a truly deserving recipient.
For the past 50 years, Rufus Sweet has been a dedicated coach, mentor, and champion of the women's game across our province. From grassroots to the rep level, Rufus has spent decades shaping players and growing the game—both at home and around the world. Regardless of the level or division of the team he has helped lead, Rufus has always gone above and beyond to create exceptional hockey experiences that extend far beyond the rink.
This past season, Rufus co-led the U15AA Western Riptide, helping guide the team to a Fair Play Award at the provincial tournament. He also played a leading role in organizing a memorable skills competition at the event.
Over five decades, Rufus has coached thousands of Nova Scotian players, mentored countless female coaches, and those who know him well say he never once asked for recognition. He simply showed up—year after year—with humility, humour, and an unwavering commitment to his teams. His leadership has helped build stronger programs, empowered female athletes, and left an indelible mark on our hockey community.
Rufus' impact can’t be captured in a single award, but we are proud to recognize him with this year’s Denny Deveau Award.
On behalf of everyone at Hockey Nova Scotia, congratulations Rufus!
