Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce that Metro East Female Hockey Association U13 AAA coach David Sparkes is the winner of our 2024 Jacques Comeau Coach of the Year Award.

The Jacques Comeau Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to the province's rep team coach of the year. It is named in memory of longtime minor hockey coach Jacques Comeau who passed away in 2014. Jacques was a volunteer with the Halifax Hawks Minor Hockey Association for many years, and was known for always exhibiting the qualities of dedication, respect and fair play while behind the bench.

With nine years of experience behind the bench, Dave has developed a coaching style that combines his hockey knowledge with unwavering care and dedication to his team. He creates an environment where players are empowered to excel both on and off the ice. 

Dave’s ability to connect with each player on his team as an individual and to understand their strengths and motivations, has fostered a culture of trust and camaraderie within the team. His approach not only enhances individual skill development but also nurtures the emotional well-being of his players, instilling confidence and resilience.

Dave’s is a mentor for young female coaches and he believes that providing strong female role models within the team environment helps young athletes realize that their dreams and aspirations are within reach through dedication and hard work. He surrounds himself with like-minded assistant coaches who share his philosophy. Together, they recognize the importance of showing confidence in their players and empowering them with knowledge and skills, which not only shapes them into better athletes but also prepares them for success beyond the game.

Dave’s meticulous approach to planning and preparation off the ice is evident in his coaching and bench management. He established a pre-game routine early in the season, requiring his athletes to focus on both physical and mental preparedness before every ice time, whether it's a game or practice. He encourages team bonding and ensures they enjoy their time together, but when it’s time to learn or prepare, the players quickly focus on the task at hand. His commitment to this process and the team’s overall development is always evident.
