CURRIE RECEIVES HNS AWARD OF MERIT

Hockey Nova Scotia is proud to announce that Blaise Currie of the Sydney Minor Hockey Association is the posthumous recipient of our 2025 Hockey Nova Scotia Award of Merit.
The Award of Merit recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the game through their dedication and service, and few embodied that spirit more than Blaise.
Blaise began coaching with Sydney Minor Hockey in 2012, guiding his children through the game with a genuine love for the sport. Until his passing in March 2025, he was a fixture on the bench and in the community—always promoting fun over winning and ensuring every child felt welcomed.
His passion extended beyond his own teams. Blaise was an enthusiastic volunteer with the First Shift Program, helping introduce the game to newcomers and instilling a lasting love for hockey in young players. He also lent his time and energy to the association’s Special Needs Program for three years, connecting with participants and becoming a favourite among the kids.
Known for his sense of humour, he famously conducted a “sweat test” after every practice to reward hard work.
Blaise was a dependable volunteer who said “yes” to every request for help. Whether behind the bench, on the ice, or organizing behind the scenes, he was always there to chip in.
Blaise Currie will be missed by his friends, fellow volunteers, and the entire Sydney Minor Hockey Association community.
We are honoured to recognize Blaise Currie with the 2025 Hockey Nova Scotia Award of Merit.
