Mark your calendars, Pictou County. The Walter Cup is coming home.

New Glasgow's own Kori Cheverie will bring the Professional Women's Hockey League championship trophy to her hometown on Friday, July 17, and the community is invited to celebrate with a parade through the streets of New Glasgow.



The parade gets underway at 11 a.m., beginning at the former Big Al's location before making its way along Provost St., Archimedes St., George St., Stellarton Rd. and Westville Rd., finishing at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Once the parade wraps up, fans will have the chance to meet Kori at the Wellness Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., where she will be signing autographs and taking pictures with the Walter Cup. Sobeys will also be on site hosting a BBQ during the meet and greet.

Cheverie made history in the spring when she guided the Montreal Victoire to their first-ever Walter Cup, becoming the first female head coach to win the PWHL championship. The Victoire also became the first Canadian team to capture the trophy, clinching the best-of-five final over the Ottawa Charge three games to one.

Before taking the reins in Montreal, Cheverie served as Hockey Nova Scotia's High Performance Female Coach, where she helped lead the province's women's team to a silver medal at the 2023 Canada Winter Games, Nova Scotia's first-ever women's hockey medal at the event.

A three-time Atlantic University Sport first team all-star with Saint Mary's University, Cheverie has also won gold as an assistant coach at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and multiple IIHF Women's World Championships. In 2016, she became the first female full-time assistant coach in Canadian university men's hockey history.
